Choose your own enlightenment
Long ago, before Westerners associated "enlightenment" with meditation or yoga, there was the Enlightenment: the philosophical revolution of the 1600s and 1700s that made the modern West. Before the Enlightenment discovered natural rights, most people had no rights, speech was restricted, and few governments were accountable to their subjects. Enlightenment ideals are still common ideals: tolerance and equality, reason and science, an educated, engaged public. But today, we are witnessing the decoupling of Enlightenment principles from Enlightenment practices.
The Enlightenment was what historians call a "grand narrative." For full effect, say it with a smirk. How foolish those costumed dreamers were to believe in the advance of human knowledge, the dignity of all individuals, and the right to think, speak, and pray as we choose. How much cleverer we are, to not bother at all with such questions as we stroke our screens. As G.K. Chesterton said, "Everything matters—except everything."
The ideal of infinite progress is, ironically, an Enlightenment inheritance: Before the modern age, progress was in the hands of the Almighty, and moral authority rested with kings and churchmen. We might see this more clearly, if only we could settle on what the Enlightenment was. Everyone knows that it happened, but no one agrees on when, why, or where. The Enlightenment aspired to scientific reason, and the discovery of universal principles. But we, locavores in taste, are local in perspective too. Since 1989, and the demise of Marxism, one of the Enlightenment's grander narratives, historians have subdivided the Enlightenment like developers with condos. Now, we look back and see many Enlightenments. French dandies discourse wittily about Reason, and why it is reasonable to destroy the church. Red-faced Brits exchange their claret for coffee, and ponder the uses of Adam Smith's invisible hand. Practical Americans discover their natural rights in the wilderness. The Germans take off their clothes and commune with Nature. The Jews keep theirs on, and commune with the Germans. Everyone enlightens, but in their own way.
There is much to be said for this picture, give or take the naked Germans. The Enlightenment was a broad phenomenon—often, we use it as a synonym for "modern life"—but its outcomes depended on local variations. This is the relationship of climate and weather: the varieties of the latter confirm the stability of the former, but the relationship between the two is always unstable. Vincenzo Ferrone, the Italian author of the forthcoming Enlightenment: History of an Idea, calls the Enlightenment a "centaur": an impossible combination. It was a set of abstract philosophical ideals, but it was also a lived historical experience, full of ordinary disappointments and irregularities. We know what a centaur should look like, but we never see one in real life.
The Trouble With Sweeping Questions About the Internet
"Ah, but a man's reach should exceed his grasp," Browning wrote, "Or what's a heaven for?" The Enlightenment was the first modern "theory of everything." Out with empires, slaves, and priests; in with nations, free minds, and free publics. If the world could be known entirely, society could be reconstructed along improved lines. That, at least, was the theory. In practice, some of the Enlightenment's local variations were terrifying, not least because the theorists of the Enlightenment thought they knew better than everyone else. The Enlightenment was made by intellectuals, and frequently for them, too. The modern intellectual prides himself on his selfless rectitude but, like the medieval churchman whose power he supplanted, he can spy a distant horizon because he looks down from a lofty height. Voltaire reviled the church, but thought religion was a good way to keep the plebs in line: better that the little folks clung to their religion than to their guns. Rousseau loathed authority, but he awarded his Enlightened state the dictator's privilege of "forcing people to be free."
"These days," Goethe said, "there remains no doubt that world history has from time to time to be rewritten." Historically, managerial elitism has been a reliable paver of the road to hell. Today, the technocrats chase a mirage of perfection, allegedly on our behalf. Lawrence Lessig tells us that we should abandon the eighteenth-century ideals of intellectual copyright, and the Constitution; perhaps Google can sponsor a Second Constitutional Convention? Cass Sunstein tells us that we cannot be trusted to make informed decisions, so the government must "nudge" us toward "healthy" choices. Why let us eat cake, when we can be forced to make free at the salad bar? These are odious ideas, the kind of suggestions that Rousseau might have made if he had worked in advertising. They reflect a widening distance between the governors and the governed, the tenured and the temporary, the rich and the poor.
In the free market of American spirituality, "enlightenment" means the sweaty contortions of the yoga studio.
The greatness of the Enlightenment lies less in its ideals, than in our efforts to realize them. The tragedy of the Enlightenment lies there too. History is made in the middle ground between theory and practice. But the middle ground, economic, social, and political, is a bad place to be in the modern West. The Enlightenment was never automatically democratic in the modern sense. The path from the Enlightenment ideal of Nature to the Enlightenment politics of natural rights often ran into the mud of the middle ground. Intellectually, the Enlightenment was always an elite business. And in business, ethics are always challenged by commercial realities.
Today, the ideals of scientific enquiry and free exchange survive, but at the expense of the Enlightenment inheritances that shaped the democratic nation state: civic tolerance, genuinely free speech, and an engaged, educated public. In the free market of American spirituality, "enlightenment" means the sweaty contortions of the yoga studio, where bodhi is only personal, never political. An educated middle class appears to be a luxury we can no longer afford. If nothing fails like success, then the Enlightenment is failing wonderfully.
"I must create a system, or be enslaved by another man's," said William Blake, full of Romantic doubts about Reason and a planned society. When the visionaries presume to plan on our behalf, we are no less obliged to refuse their presumption. Like Kant said, we are autonomous subjects, providing we try to act like it. If we outsource the intellectual labor of decision-making to the upper crust, or surrender to the bread and circuses of digital entertainment, we cannot complain about the results. Long ago, before the Enlightenment, people cowered before governments and speech laws. The Enlightenment offered an alternative, but it is one that must continually be affirmed: by public actions, by intellectual engagement, and by voting. We must make our own Enlightenment, or be chosen by someone else's.

Wy does life exist?
Popular hypotheses credit a primordial soup, a bolt of lightning and a colossal stroke of luck. But if a provocative new theory is correct, luck may have little to do with it. Instead, according to the physicist proposing the idea, the origin and subsequent evolution of life follow from the fundamental laws of nature and “should be as unsurprising as rocks rolling downhill.”
From the standpoint of physics, there is one essential difference between living things and inanimate clumps of carbon atoms: The former tend to be much better at capturing energy from their environment and dissipating that energy as heat. Jeremy England, a 31-year-old assistant professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has derived a mathematical formula that he believes explains this capacity. The formula, based on established physics, indicates that when a group of atoms is driven by an external source of energy (like the sun or chemical fuel) and surrounded by a heat bath (like the ocean or atmosphere), it will often gradually restructure itself in order to dissipate increasingly more energy. This could mean that under certain conditions, matter inexorably acquires the key physical attribute associated with life.

“You start with a random clump of atoms, and if you shine light on it for long enough, it should not be so surprising that you get a plant,” England said.
England’s theory is meant to underlie, rather than replace, Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection, which provides a powerful description of life at the level of genes and populations. “I am certainly not saying that Darwinian ideas are wrong,” he explained. “On the contrary, I am just saying that from the perspective of the physics, you might call Darwinian evolution a special case of a more general phenomenon.”
His idea, detailed in a recent paper and further elaborated in a talk he is delivering at universities around the world, has sparked controversy among his colleagues, who see it as either tenuous or a potential breakthrough, or both.
England has taken “a very brave and very important step,” said Alexander Grosberg, a professor of physics at New York University who has followed England’s work since its early stages. The “big hope” is that he has identified the underlying physical principle driving the origin and evolution of life, Grosberg said.
“Jeremy is just about the brightest young scientist I ever came across,” said Attila Szabo, a biophysicist in the Laboratory of Chemical Physics at the National Institutes of Health who corresponded with England about his theory after meeting him at a conference. “I was struck by the originality of the ideas.”
Others, such as Eugene Shakhnovich, a professor of chemistry, chemical biology and biophysics at Harvard University, are not convinced. “Jeremy’s ideas are interesting and potentially promising, but at this point are extremely speculative, especially as applied to life phenomena,” Shakhnovich said.
England’s theoretical results are generally considered valid. It is his interpretation — that his formula represents the driving force behind a class of phenomena in nature that includes life — that remains unproven. But already, there are ideas about how to test that interpretation in the lab.
“He’s trying something radically different,” said Mara Prentiss, a professor of physics at Harvard who is contemplating such an experiment after learning about England’s work. “As an organizing lens, I think he has a fabulous idea. Right or wrong, it’s going to be very much worth the investigation.”

At the heart of England’s idea is the second law of thermodynamics, also known as the law of increasing entropy or the “arrow of time.” Hot things cool down, gas diffuses through air, eggs scramble but never spontaneously unscramble; in short, energy tends to disperse or spread out as time progresses. Entropy is a measure of this tendency, quantifying how dispersed the energy is among the particles in a system, and how diffuse those particles are throughout space. It increases as a simple matter of probability: There are more ways for energy to be spread out than for it to be concentrated. Thus, as particles in a system move around and interact, they will, through sheer chance, tend to adopt configurations in which the energy is spread out. Eventually, the system arrives at a state of maximum entropy called “thermodynamic equilibrium,” in which energy is uniformly distributed. A cup of coffee and the room it sits in become the same temperature, for example. As long as the cup and the room are left alone, this process is irreversible. The coffee never spontaneously heats up again because the odds are overwhelmingly stacked against so much of the room’s energy randomly concentrating in its atoms.
Although entropy must increase over time in an isolated or “closed” system, an “open” system can keep its entropy low — that is, divide energy unevenly among its atoms — by greatly increasing the entropy of its surroundings. In his influential 1944 monograph “What Is Life?” the eminent quantum physicist Erwin Schrödinger argued that this is what living things must do. A plant, for example, absorbs extremely energetic sunlight, uses it to build sugars, and ejects infrared light, a much less concentrated form of energy. The overall entropy of the universe increases during photosynthesis as the sunlight dissipates, even as the plant prevents itself from decaying by maintaining an orderly internal structure.
Life does not violate the second law of thermodynamics, but until recently, physicists were unable to use thermodynamics to explain why it should arise in the first place. In Schrödinger’s day, they could solve the equations of thermodynamics only for closed systems in equilibrium. In the 1960s, the Belgian physicist Ilya Prigogine made progress on predicting the behavior of open systems weakly driven by external energy sources (for which he won the 1977 Nobel Prize in chemistry). But the behavior of systems that are far from equilibrium, which are connected to the outside environment and strongly driven by external sources of energy, could not be predicted.
This situation changed in the late 1990s, due primarily to the work of Chris Jarzynski, now at the University of Maryland, and Gavin Crooks, now at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Jarzynski and Crooks showed that the entropy produced by a thermodynamic process, such as the cooling of a cup of coffee, corresponds to a simple ratio: the probability that the atoms will undergo that process divided by their probability of undergoing the reverse process (that is, spontaneously interacting in such a way that the coffee warms up). As entropy production increases, so does this ratio: A system’s behavior becomes more and more “irreversible.” The simple yet rigorous formula could in principle be applied to any thermodynamic process, no matter how fast or far from equilibrium. “Our understanding of far-from-equilibrium statistical mechanics greatly improved,” Grosberg said. England, who is trained in both biochemistry and physics, started his own lab at MIT two years ago and decided to apply the new knowledge of statistical physics to biology.
Using Jarzynski and Crooks’ formulation, he derived a generalization of the second law of thermodynamics that holds for systems of particles with certain characteristics: The systems are strongly driven by an external energy source such as an electromagnetic wave, and they can dump heat into a surrounding bath. This class of systems includes all living things. England then determined how such systems tend to evolve over time as they increase their irreversibility. “We can show very simply from the formula that the more likely evolutionary outcomes are going to be the ones that absorbed and dissipated more energy from the environment’s external drives on the way to getting there,” he said. The finding makes intuitive sense: Particles tend to dissipate more energy when they resonate with a driving force, or move in the direction it is pushing them, and they are more likely to move in that direction than any other at any given moment.
“This means clumps of atoms surrounded by a bath at some temperature, like the atmosphere or the ocean, should tend over time to arrange themselves to resonate better and better with the sources of mechanical, electromagnetic or chemical work in their environments,” England explained.

Self-Replicating Sphere Clusters: According to new research at Harvard, coating the surfaces of microspheres can cause them to spontaneously assemble into a chosen structure, such as a polytetrahedron (red), which then triggers nearby spheres into forming an identical structure.
Self-replication (or reproduction, in biological terms), the process that drives the evolution of life on Earth, is one such mechanism by which a system might dissipate an increasing amount of energy over time. As England put it, “A great way of dissipating more is to make more copies of yourself.” In a September paperin the Journal of Chemical Physics, he reported the theoretical minimum amount of dissipation that can occur during the self-replication of RNA molecules and bacterial cells, and showed that it is very close to the actual amounts these systems dissipate when replicating. He also showed that RNA, the nucleic acid that many scientists believe served as the precursor to DNA-based life, is a particularly cheap building material. Once RNA arose, he argues, its “Darwinian takeover” was perhaps not surprising.
The chemistry of the primordial soup, random mutations, geography, catastrophic events and countless other factors have contributed to the fine details of Earth’s diverse flora and fauna. But according to England’s theory, the underlying principle driving the whole process is dissipation-driven adaptation of matter.
This principle would apply to inanimate matter as well. “It is very tempting to speculate about what phenomena in nature we can now fit under this big tent of dissipation-driven adaptive organization,” England said. “Many examples could just be right under our nose, but because we haven’t been looking for them we haven’t noticed them.”
Scientists have already observed self-replication in nonliving systems. According to new research led by Philip Marcus of the University of California, Berkeley, andreported in Physical Review Letters in August, vortices in turbulent fluids spontaneously replicate themselves by drawing energy from shear in the surrounding fluid. And in a paper appearing online this week in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Michael Brenner, a professor of applied mathematics and physics at Harvard, and his collaborators present theoretical models and simulations of microstructures that self-replicate. These clusters of specially coated microspheres dissipate energy by roping nearby spheres into forming identical clusters. “This connects very much to what Jeremy is saying,” Brenner said.
Besides self-replication, greater structural organization is another means by which strongly driven systems ramp up their ability to dissipate energy. A plant, for example, is much better at capturing and routing solar energy through itself than an unstructured heap of carbon atoms. Thus, England argues that under certain conditions, matter will spontaneously self-organize. This tendency could account for the internal order of living things and of many inanimate structures as well. “Snowflakes, sand dunes and turbulent vortices all have in common that they are strikingly patterned structures that emerge in many-particle systems driven by some dissipative process,” he said. Condensation, wind and viscous drag are the relevant processes in these particular cases.
“He is making me think that the distinction between living and nonliving matter is not sharp,” said Carl Franck, a biological physicist at Cornell University, in an email. “I’m particularly impressed by this notion when one considers systems as small as chemical circuits involving a few biomolecules.”

If a new theory is correct, the same physics it identifies as responsible for the origin of living things could explain the formation of many other patterned structures in nature. Snowflakes, sand dunes and self-replicating vortices in the protoplanetary disk may all be examples of dissipation-driven adaptation.
England’s bold idea will likely face close scrutiny in the coming years. He is currently running computer simulations to test his theory that systems of particles adapt their structures to become better at dissipating energy. The next step will be to run experiments on living systems.
Prentiss, who runs an experimental biophysics lab at Harvard, says England’s theory could be tested by comparing cells with different mutations and looking for a correlation between the amount of energy the cells dissipate and their replication rates. “One has to be careful because any mutation might do many things,” she said. “But if one kept doing many of these experiments on different systems and if [dissipation and replication success] are indeed correlated, that would suggest this is the correct organizing principle.”
Brenner said he hopes to connect England’s theory to his own microsphere constructions and determine whether the theory correctly predicts which self-replication and self-assembly processes can occur — “a fundamental question in science,” he said.
Having an overarching principle of life and evolution would give researchers a broader perspective on the emergence of structure and function in living things, many of the researchers said. “Natural selection doesn’t explain certain characteristics,” said Ard Louis, a biophysicist at Oxford University, in an email. These characteristics include a heritable change to gene expression called methylation, increases in complexity in the absence of natural selection, and certain molecular changes Louis has recently studied.
If England’s approach stands up to more testing, it could further liberate biologists from seeking a Darwinian explanation for every adaptation and allow them to think more generally in terms of dissipation-driven organization. They might find, for example, that “the reason that an organism shows characteristic X rather than Y may not be because X is more fit than Y, but because physical constraints make it easier for X to evolve than for Y to evolve,” Louis said.
“People often get stuck in thinking about individual problems,” Prentiss said. Whether or not England’s ideas turn out to be exactly right, she said, “thinking more broadly is where many scientific breakthroughs are made.”

Are the worst really full of passionate intensity?

Now, when we are all in a state of shock after the killing spree in the Charlie Hebdo offices, it is the right moment to gather the courage to think. We should, of course, unambiguously condemn the killings as an attack on the very substance our freedoms, and condemn them without any hidden caveats (in the style of "Charlie Hebdo was nonetheless provoking and humiliating the Muslims too much"). But such pathos of universal solidarity is not enough – we should think further.
Such thinking has nothing whatsoever to do with the cheap relativisation of the crime (the mantra of "who are we in the West, perpetrators of terrible massacres in the Third World, to condemn such acts"). It has even less to do with the pathological fear of many Western liberal Leftists to be guilty of Islamophobia. For these false Leftists, any critique of Islam is denounced as an expression of Western Islamophobia; Salman Rushdie was denounced for unnecessarily provoking Muslims and thus (partially, at least) responsible for the fatwa condemning him to death, etc. The result of such stance is what one can expect in such cases: the more the Western liberal Leftists probe into their guilt, the more they are accused by Muslim fundamentalists of being hypocrites who try to conceal their hatred of Islam. This constellation perfectly reproduces the paradox of the superego: the more you obey what the Other demands of you, the guiltier you are. It is as if the more you tolerate Islam, the stronger its pressure on you will be . . .
This is why I also find insufficient calls for moderation along the lines of Simon Jenkins's claim (in The Guardian on January 7) that our task is “not to overreact, not to over-publicise the aftermath. It is to treat each event as a passing accident of horror” – the attack on Charlie Hebdo was not a mere “passing accident of horror”. it followed a precise religious and political agenda and was as such clearly part of a much larger pattern. Of course we should not overreact, if by this is meant succumbing to blind Islamophobia – but we should ruthlessly analyse this pattern.
What is much more needed than the demonisation of the terrorists into heroic suicidal fanatics is a debunking of this demonic myth. Long ago Friedrich Nietzsche perceived how Western civilisation was moving in the direction of the Last Man, an apathetic creature with no great passion or commitment. Unable to dream, tired of life, he takes no risks, seeking only comfort and security, an expression of tolerance with one another: “A little poison now and then: that makes for pleasant dreams. And much poison at the end, for a pleasant death. They have their little pleasures for the day, and their little pleasures for the night, but they have a regard for health. ‘We have discovered happiness,’ - say the Last Men, and they blink.”
It effectively may appear that the split between the permissive First World and the fundamentalist reaction to it runs more and more along the lines of the opposition between leading a long satisfying life full of material and cultural wealth, and dedicating one's life to some transcendent Cause. Is this antagonism not the one between what Nietzsche called "passive" and "active" nihilism? We in the West are the Nietzschean Last Men, immersed in stupid daily pleasures, while the Muslim radicals are ready to risk everything, engaged in the struggle up to their self-destruction. William Butler Yeats’ “Second Coming” seems perfectly to render our present predicament: “The best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity.” This is an excellent description of the current split between anemic liberals and impassioned fundamentalists. “The best” are no longer able fully to engage, while “the worst” engage in racist, religious, sexist fanaticism.
However, do the terrorist fundamentalists really fit this description? What they obviously lack is a feature that is easy to discern in all authentic fundamentalists, from Tibetan Buddhists to the Amish in the US: the absence of resentment and envy, the deep indifference towards the non-believers’ way of life. If today’s so-called fundamentalists really believe they have found their way to Truth, why should they feel threatened by non-believers, why should they envy them? When a Buddhist encounters a Western hedonist, he hardly condemns. He just benevolently notes that the hedonist’s search for happiness is self-defeating. In contrast to true fundamentalists, the terrorist pseudo-fundamentalists are deeply bothered, intrigued, fascinated, by the sinful life of the non-believers. One can feel that, in fighting the sinful other, they are fighting their own temptation.
It is here that Yeats’ diagnosis falls short of the present predicament: the passionate intensity of the terrorists bears witness to a lack of true conviction. How fragile the belief of a Muslim must be if he feels threatened by a stupid caricature in a weekly satirical newspaper? The fundamentalist Islamic terror isnot grounded in the terrorists’ conviction of their superiority and in their desire to safeguard their cultural-religious identity from the onslaught of global consumerist civilization. The problem with fundamentalists is not that we consider them inferior to us, but, rather, that they themselves secretly consider themselves inferior. This is why our condescending politically correct assurances that we feel no superiority towards them only makes them more furious and feeds their resentment. The problem is not cultural difference (their effort to preserve their identity), but the opposite fact that the fundamentalists are already like us, that, secretly, they have already internalized our standards and measure themselves by them. Paradoxically, what the fundamentalists really lack is precisely a dose of that true ‘racist’ conviction of their own superiority.
The recent vicissitudes of Muslim fundamentalism confirm Walter Benjamin's old insight that “every rise of Fascism bears witness to a failed revolution”: the rise of Fascism is the Left’s failure, but simultaneously a proof that there was a revolutionary potential, dissatisfaction, which the Left was not able to mobilize. And does the same not hold for today’s so-called “Islamo-Fascism”? Is the rise of radical Islamism not exactly correlative to the disappearance of the secular Left in Muslim countries? When, back in the Spring of 2009, Taliban took over the Swat valley in Pakistan, New York Times reported that they engineered "a class revolt that exploits profound fissures between a small group of wealthy landlords and their landless tenants". If, however, by “taking advantage” of the farmers’ plight, The Taliban are “raising alarm about the risks to Pakistan, which remains largely feudal,” what prevents liberal democrats in Pakistan as well as the US to similarly “take advantage” of this plight and try to help the landless farmers? The sad implication of this fact is that the feudal forces in Pakistan are the “natural ally” of the liberal democracy…
So what about the core values of liberalism: freedom, equality, etc.? The paradox is that liberalism itself is not strong enough to save them against the fundamentalist onslaught. Fundamentalism is a reaction – a false, mystifying, reaction, of course - against a real flaw of liberalism, and this is why it is again and again generated by liberalism. Left to itself, liberalism will slowly undermine itself – the only thing that can save its core values is a renewed Left. In order for this key legacy to survive, liberalism needs the brotherly help of the radical Left. THIS is the only way to defeat fundamentalism, to sweep the ground under its feet.
To think in response to the Paris killings means to drop the smug self-satisfaction of a permissive liberal and to accept that the conflict between liberal permissiveness and fundamentalism is ultimately a false conflict – a vicious cycle of two poles generating and presupposing each other. What Max Horkheimer had said about Fascism and capitalism already back in 1930s - those who do not want to talk critically about capitalism should also keep quiet about Fascism - should also be applied to today’s fundamentalism: those who do not want to talk critically about liberal democracy should also keep quiet about religious fundamentalism.

Aaron Swartz
A "liberdade" tem as costas largas no "mundo livre" e "civilizado". E às vezes é conspurcada.

A primeira vez que encontrei Aaron Swartz foi na Universidade Harvard. Havia um importante seminário acontecendo sobre o futuro da música. O ano era 2004. Gravadoras, artistas e público ainda se recuperavam do choque do Napster, o site que deu início ao compartilhamento de arquivos na internet e transformou para sempre a economia da música. Naquela mesa discutia-se o que fazer com a crise da indústria musical. A pirataria certamente não era um caminho. Era preciso construir alternativas que remunerassem os artistas, ampliando também as formas de acesso à música. No meio de discussões acaloradas, um garoto chamava atenção. Ele estava ali no meio de acadêmicos mundialmente conhecidos, como Lawrence Lessig e William Fisher, professores de direito de Harvard, ambos ligados às questões de distribuição de informações na internet. Pensei que se tratasse do filho de alguém. Não demorou para perceber meu erro. Aaron estava lá por causa de suas próprias ideias. Articulado, conhecia tudo sobre direitos autorais e sobre a indústria musical, temas que ainda quebram a cabeça de muita gente até hoje. Para completar, o garoto era também um exímio programador. Poucas pessoas naquela sala dominavam campos de conhecimento tão vastos e complexos.
Em 11 de janeiro de 2013, Aaron foi encontrado morto por sua namorada, a ativista Taren Stinebrickner-Kauffman, em seu apartamento no Brooklyn, em Nova York. A tragédia virou comoção global. TVs e jornais do mundo inteiro escreveram sobre ele. Mas foi nas redes sociais que a dimensão da perda foi sentida com maior intensidade. Não só os amigos de Aaron, mas um vasto contingente de desconhecidos, que nunca tinham ouvido falar dele antes, lamentaram sua morte. E lamentaram também a perseguição judicial que acabou causando a tragédia.
Aos 14 anos, Aaron fez um feito incrível. Ele foi o co-autor de um padrão que mudaria a forma como a informação é distribuída na internet, o chamado RSS (Real Simple Syndication). O padrão permite de forma simples espalhar a informação por meio de feeds na rede: fluxos de dados que o usuário pode assinar e acompanhar em qualquer aparelho, seja no PC, no celular ou no tablet. Para entender a importância de sua invenção, basta ver o Google Reader ou até mesmo os feeds de notícias de seus amigos no Facebook ou no Twitter: todos surgiram a partir da ideia criada por ele.
Tem gente que compara Aaron Swartz a Mark Zuckerberg, fundador do Facebook, ou mesmo a Steve Jobs, da Apple. Como Zuckerberg, Aaron tinha a veia de empreendedor. Aos 18 anos, criou a empresa Infogami, que foi vendida ao site Reddit, hoje parte do poderoso grupo de mídia Condè-Nast. De Steve Jobs, ele tinha o mesmo brilhantismo para soluções inesperadas e para pensar fora da caixa. Assim como Jobs, ele circulava pelas principais universidades de elite dos EUA, como Stanford, Harvard e o MIT, mas sem ter nunca concluído um curso. Se tivesse vivido mais, Aaron poderia ter criado o novo Google ou um novo Facebook. Possivelmente teria se tornado bilionário. Só que isso não o satisfazia. Ele queria ir além. Queria mudar o mundo.
A revolução está na rede
Para fazer isso, começou a se envolver em iniciativas de interesse público. Por exemplo, o projeto Creative Commons, que cria licenças livres de direitos autorais e que é hoje utilizado por sites como a Wikipedia ou nas aulas da Khan Academy, aqueles cursos do YouTube abertos para qualquer um. Com isso, ficou amigo do professor Lawrence Lessig, que acabara de se tornar diretor do Centro de Ética de Harvard. Lessig chamou Aaron para se juntar a ele em uma missão ambiciosa: reformar o Congresso americano. Na visão deles, o sistema político dos EUA estava perdendo transparência e representatividade. O trabalho de Aaron era pensar novas formas de financiamento de campanha, que permitam que os eleitores contribuam diretamente para seus candidatos, em vez de deixar o financiamento na mão das grandes empresas.
Mas, como visionário e idealista, Aaron também cometia erros. Para defender uma das causas que julgava mais importantes, o acesso público ao conhecimento científico, Aaron acabou envolvido na sucessão de eventos que desencadearia sua morte. Na sua visão, o conhecimento acadêmico deveria ser acessível para toda a humanidade pela internet. Afinal, dizia ele, grande parte das pesquisas científicas é produzida com recursos públicos.
Como um bom integrante da impaciente geração Y, que quer fazer tudo acontecer na hora, ele decidiu executar seu plano com as próprias mãos. Foi até o MIT, o Massachusetts Institute of Technology, onde tinha diversos amigos e colaboradores, e deixou seu computador fazendo o download de mais de 4 milhões de artigos acadêmicos gerenciados pela biblioteca virtual JSTOR, que reúne publicações científicas, livros e pesquisas. No processo, acabou sendo pego pelo MIT, que tomou a decisão de entregá-lo à polícia local. Vale notar que Aaron nunca colocou os artigos na internet. Seu erro foi apenas baixá-los para seu computador. Tempos depois, a própria JSTOR acabou tirando o processo contra ele.
Apesar disso, dois procuradores federais americanos, Carmen Ortiz e Stephen Heymann resolveram prosseguir com o processo. Decidiram que Aaron deveria se tornar um exemplo, um bode expiatório sujeito a grande punição. Para isso, usaram uma lei dos EUA aprovada no longínquo ano de 1984, o Computer Fraud and Abuse Act ("Lei de fraudes e abusos de computadores"), e agiram sem misericórdia para que ele fosse condenado a mais de 30 anos de prisão. Além disso, Carmen Ortiz queria concorrer ao governo do Estado de Massachusetts e foi acusada de usar o processo para ganhar visibilidade.
Ele morreu antes do julgamento, marcado para abril de 2013. A luta de Aaron contra a Justiça dos EUA foi árdua. Sua namorada disse em depoimento público que ele não estava em depressão - Aaron a pediu em casamento dois meses antes de morrer. Na visão dela, sua morte é o resultado de uma enorme injustiça, que colocou de um lado todo o poder do sistema judiciário dos EUA contra um garoto que se locomovia de bicicleta. Isso exauriu suas energias e recursos financeiros - a multa prevista era de até US$ 1 milhão. Aaron era um patriota. Dedicou seu tempo e inteligência para tentar melhorar as instituições democráticas de seu país. Ver esse mesmo país voltando-se contra ele foi além do que ele conseguiu suportar.
Apesar da tragédia, o legado de Aaron sobrevive. Existe uma lei tramitando nos EUA com seu nome, que quer impedir que casos semelhantes se repitam. Quem se debruçar sobre os textos que ele escreveu (e foram muitos) vai encontrar um pensador original e poderoso. Aaron não era só um programador. Era alguém interessado em entender como a sociedade funciona. Os textos do seu blog, aaronsw.com, preservados online, trazem discussões sobre diversos temas, de cinema a moda, de política a programação. Ele lia cerca de cem livros por ano e fazia uma resenha de cada - a lista cobre assuntos diversos, como textos sobre economia de Keynes ou crônicas de Radical Chique, de Tom Wolfe.
Quando esteve no Brasil em 2009 para participar do Fórum Social Mundial, Aaron ficou hospedado na minha casa. Era um garoto que vivia conectado o tempo todo na internet, como tantos outros da sua idade. Tinha alergia a amendoim e qualquer tipo de castanhas. Ficou separando cuidadosamente as nozes do quibe assado que foi servido no almoço no dia em que chegou ao Rio. Foi nessa ocasião que ele acabou me concedendo uma longa entrevista. Perguntei como uma criança podia ter feito tanta coisa, e qual era a diferença dele para outros garotos da mesma idade. Ele respondeu: "Não acho que eu seja mais inteligente do que os outros. Com certeza não trabalho mais duro do que ninguém. O que eu sempre tive foi curiosidade. Toda criança tem uma curiosidade enorme. A questão é que a escola a absorve, em vez de deixar as crianças a explorarem por conta própria. Quem tenta fazer algo diferente acaba tendo problemas. A curiosidade de poucas pessoas sobrevive a isso".
No fim, a história de Aaron é a história de toda uma geração. Uma que nasceu bem no momento em que o mundo estava aprendendo a se conectar em rede e que acredita que isso pode transformá-lo em algo universalmente melhor. Graças a esse idealismo e inconformismo, é uma geração que luta para encontrar seu lugar e para ser aceita, do seu jeito. A morte de Aaron é um evento grande e triste. E vamos sentir seus efeitos por muito tempo ainda.

Salaam Aleikum
Todas as regiões podem ser instrumentalizadas para serem tolerantes e não tolerantes em função de contextos históricos e políticos. Os cristãos foram perseguidos pelos romanos mas mataram-se entre si aos milhões na cisma protestante. Houve um tempo em que judeus expulsos de países católicos como os sefarditas da Península Ibérica encontraram abrigo em países islâmicos. Houve um tempo em que a civilização islâmica era mais tolerante e tecnologicamente e culturalmente mais avançada que a cristã. Houve as cruzadas, mas antes disso o Império Bizantino foi conquistado pelo Império Otomano. Existem radicais hindus e budistas. Os totalitarismos de esquerda ateístas geraram igualmente horrores e violência extrema. Vários acontecimentos históricos originaram a laicização dos estados europeus aos longo dos últimos séculos onde os valores da revolução francesa moldaram as nossas sociedades para aquilo que são hoje, originados a reboque do renascimento e do iluminismo. Relembre-se que tal não impediu o nazismo e o fascismo de surgirem com as consequências que se conhecem.Contudo, em 2015 a total liberdade de culto, a garantia dos direitos das minorias está consagrada no Ocidente. À excepção do Vaticano não existe nenhuma teocracia na Europa. No mundo islâmico não surgiram dinâmicas homólogas e já na historia recente vivida por nós podemos assistir mudanças que às luz dos actuais valores consagrados no Ocidente podem ser encaradas como involutivas. A Arábia Saudita, o Irão, o Paquistão e a Mauritânia são oficialmente teocracias. As minorias religiosas, nomeadamente os cristãos, são ostracizados socialmente e vítimas de violência e terrorismo em muitos locais. Essa violência não é apenas dirigida a outras religiões, veja-se somente o caso do atentado indescritível que matou 140 crianças no Paquistão.A apostasia pode levar à morte no Sudão, um simples roubo é punido com a amputação das mãos, numa interpretação literal da Sharia na Nigéria islâmica. Na lista da OCDE dos 20 países do mundo que mais discriminam as mulheres não há nenhum ocidental mas há vários muçulmanos. De direitos de homossexuais nem vale a pena falar. Há em parte significativa do mundo islâmico encruzilhadas e lutas internas entre conservadores e progressistas cujos desfechos são imprevisíveis. Veja-se o que sucedeu com as primaveras árabes em que os movimentos progressistas regrediram contra a expectativa inicial, relembre-se os conflitos ocorridos no Irão e mais recentemente na Turquia. Ou seja, existem problemas internos graves que estão para além da loucura demente e felizmente minoritária do ISIS e das explicações ignorantes que colocam a explicação do terrorismo e do ódio ao ocidente nas “políticas europeias”, na questão palestiniana ou na guerra do Iraque e até há quem refira as Cruzadas…. (Um nota: apoio a causa palestiniana e a intervenção do Iraque foi uma vergonha inqualificável). Por fim, ressalve-se que a reposta a dar deve ser assente nos valores que dizemos apregoar. Implacáveis com os radicais, mas “integristas” no relacionamento com os islâmicos que vivem na europa, garantindo que os seus direitos são tão respeitáveis e inalienáveis como os nossos. Na relação com os países islâmicos compreender que cada estado tem as suas idiossincrasias e esperar que as mudanças a ocorrer surjam por osmose evitando o delírio da imposição de padrões culturais à força. No entanto não cair na ingenuidade dominante da relativização extrema.

Je suis Charlie Hebdo III
O exercício de um humor mais sofisticado que vá para além das graçolas dos Batanetes exigem que as pessoas tenham alguma formação cultural de modo a poderem compreender as temáticas retratadas e as figuras de estilo associadas como o sarcasmo, a ironia o eufumismo etc… Não é para todos. Depois devem ter formação cívica para saberem que na sociedade onde vivem quando nos sentimos ofendidos existem leis e instituições a quem podemos recorrer, cabendo a essas instituições decidir eventuais limites e censuras. Responderem com insultos ainda é naquela…. Ameaçar, agredir e no limite matar não tem justificação possível numa sociedade civilizada….. Perceber algo tão básico como isto também não está ao alcance de todos. Perceber que há um desporto giro em que 22 rapazolas tentam pôr uma bola numa baliza e não uma batalha épica onde se decide o destino da humanidade também não é para todos. Somando os todos todos deduz-se então sem surpresa que muitos pensam que a mulher que foi para a rua de mini saia e foi vítima de violação estava a pedi-las, em que programas como o Daily Show são impensáveis pois fazer humor com políticos só em doses homeopáticas, que há humoristas que dizem abertamente que evitam o futebol como tema caso contrário são ostracizados e que existe um número inacreditável de pessoas que se ofendem muito mais se o seu Benfica, Porto ou Sporting forem vítimas de humor (nota: traduza-se ataques vis e merecedores de punições extremas na perspectiva desses estafermos) do que com outra coisa qualquer que aconteça nas suas vidas. Esta gente toda anda por aí, mas agora revelam a sua infinita estupidez e ignorância nas redes socias. Ontem com comentários surreais ao sucedido. Como silenciá-los não é obviamente opção, resta combate-los ou ignorá-los. Acima de tudo evitar a contaminação.
Portugal está cheio de gente criada e endocrinada no neo-fascismo salazarista, ainda está muito presente em Portugal e que pugna pelo "respeitinho". A vaga liberalitária, anarquista e existencialista do Maio de 68 que moldou os cronistas do Charlie Abdout está tão próxima da maioria dos Portugueses, letrados, semi-letrados e não letrados, como Marte.

Não se percebe a gabarolice dos estúpidos assassinos quando gritaram "Matámos a Charlie Hebdo".
Não se pode matar a Charlie Hebdo. Não se pode matar a valente e hilariante revista que goza com tudo e com todos desde os tempos em que se chamava Hara-Kiri. Muitos poderosos tentaram censurar os satíricos da Charlie Hebdo. Nunca conseguiram. Nunca conseguirão.
O que se pode matar é a liberdade de expressão. Ou reforçá-la: foi o que fizeram os estúpidos assassinos que reagiram a desenhos satíricos massacrando os autores com metralhadoras. Desencadeou-se imediatamente uma onda de solidariedade francesa e internacional para reafirmar a liberdade de expressão.
Os mais perigosos inimigos da liberdade de expressão são pessoas inteligentes e bem-intencionadas que publicamente pedem tratamento especial para a religião islâmica (ou qualquer outra religião) para não "ferir susceptibilidades" ou "fazer provocações". São pessoas liberais que defendem calmamente a protecção das sensibilidades muçulmanas através da violação da liberdade de expressão, por muito civilizada e politicamente correcta que seja a forma de censura que propõem.
Mostraram-se quando foi o caso de Salman Rushdie e mostrar-se-ão outra vez dentro em breve. Quem será o primeiro idiota entre nós a dizer que a culpa foi dos assassinados da Charlie Hebdo? Tem todo o direito de dizê-lo. É isso a liberdade de expressão. Ser-se estúpido também é um direito. Até os assassinos o têm

Religion, a mediaeval form of unreason, when combined with modern weaponry becomes a real threat to our freedoms. This religious totalitarianism has caused a deadly mutation in the heart of Islam and we see the tragic consequences in Paris today. I stand with Charlie Hebdo, as we all must, to defend the art of satire, which has always been a force for liberty and against tyranny, dishonesty and stupidity. ‘Respect for religion’ has become a code phrase meaning ‘fear of religion.’ Religions, like all other ideas, deserve criticism, satire, and, yes, our fearless disrespect.
